Adults and Braces

Posted .

For years, braces were a right of passage for teenagers. In recent years however, more and more adults are considering getting braces. Besides the cosmetic considerations, there are other reasons for getting braces as an adult. Braces can correct a bad bite. When your teeth are improperly aligned, they can strike one another at irregular angles, causing damage to your teeth, and the enamel, which can lead to tooth decay, and even gum disease.

If you are thinking about getting braces as an adult, you should schedule an appointment with our orthodontist, Dr. Adam Lautt at Coastal Orthodontic Care in Ventura, California, to see if braces are right for you.

As an adult, there may be issues affecting you treatment that don’t apply to young people. For example, adults are more prone to have a gum disease called gingivitis. The bones in an adult mouth have stopped growing, and have hardened with age, which could mean you will have to wear your braces longer than a young person. You may have lost bone mass in your jaw over time, and there may not be enough bone between the roots of your teeth to provide the necessary blood flow. If you have had teeth extracted in the past, the areas left over may not be suitable as new positions for your teeth.

While adults may have certain issues with getting braces, that should not stop you investigating ways to realign your smile. When you talk with Dr. Adam Lautt, you will have the chance to examine all of your options.
