Dealing with Damage To Your Braces

Posted .

As you know, your braces are going to be with you for many months. In fact, depending on your course of treatment, you may have to wear them for a year or more. Braces have an important job to do, and they need to be kept in good shape for the duration of your treatment.

However, accidents do happen, and there are times when your braces may be damaged. That damage may come from something that you eat, or you may have an accident. Whatever the case, don’t panic. There are steps you can take to address the damage until you can get in to our office.

If you have a loose bracket, you can use dental wax to keep it from causing you discomfort. If one of your bands comes loose, don’t try to fix the problem yourself. Instead, save the band and contact our office. We will replace it during your appointment.

One of the more common problems with braces is a wire that has broken and is poking into your cheek or your gum. You may be tempted to trim the wire, but don’t do that. If you cut the wire, you may inhale or swallow the piece you have removed. Instead of cutting the wire, try moving it into a position which won’t cause pain or discomfort. The loose wire has caused a cut or a sore in your mouth, rinse with warm salt water or an antiseptic rinse. An over-the-counter pain reliever, or a topical numbing agent can help ease the pain until you can some see us. We will need to repair the damage so that your braces can keep straightening your teeth.
