Expectations When Getting Braces

Posted .

If you or a family member needs orthodontic care, you may want to know what to expect, to ensure you are comfortable with wearing braces. There are different adjustments when getting orthodontic treatment, but with knowledge and understanding, you can bypass issues and enjoy the process. Once treatment is completed, you can be confident, knowing your smile will be fully aligned and even, with a proper bite on the top and bottom teeth.

At Coastal Orthodontic Care, we go through your concerns and questions, so you are fully armed with everything you need to know, before starting orthodontic treatment. Here are some things to expect:

  • Before getting orthodontic treatment, your teeth need to be sufficiently cleaned by your orthodontist, so the braces can be correctly cemented to your teeth.
  • Some discomfort is to be expected the first few days to a week when first getting braces. Sensitivity, pressure, and possible some sores may develop, which is normal. Soft foods are best, such as soup, pasta, potatoes, and bananas are good choices. You can also take some oral medication, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
  • Brushing and flossing will not be the same with braces, so just be aware it will take some practice to brush and floss correctly and effectively. Our orthodontist, Dr. Adam Lautt, will go over proper instructions with you.
  • Speaking and chewing may be a little difficult for the first week, so again, try soft foods and even ice cream and ice water to help with swelling.

It’s very important to take good care of your teeth while wearing braces since food particles can get stuck in-between braces and your teeth. For more information, please contact us at 805-650-1080.
