If you’re experiencing soreness in your teeth after an orthodontic adjustment, there is nothing to worry about. This is normal and expected. In fact, it’s a sign your teeth are moving, which means you’re on your way toward the smile of your dreams! However, this doesn’t make it any less inconvenient. So, to help you relieve the discomfort you are feeling, our orthodontist, Dr. Lautt, has some tips for you.
First, rinse with warm water and take pain medication. Doing these things can relax the oral muscles and keep the tooth roots from experiencing pain. So, feel free to rinse with warm water as much as you desire and take over-the-counter pain medication when you feel it’s needed. Some medications that can help you include Tylenol and ibuprofen.
Second, eat a soft diet. A soft diet can include mashed potatoes, yogurt, cottage cheese, and other soft, easy-to-eat foods. If you avoid eating hard foods as much as possible, there is a good chance you can regulate the soreness you feel.
Third, use your teeth. It’s best to treat your chompers like a sore muscle. The more you use them, the better. Using your teeth can help your mouth adjust to the new pressure quicker.
