How to Maintain a Healthy Smile When You Have Braces

Posted .

When you align your smile with braces, plaque and food particles can easily gather around your appliance and between your teeth and cause issues. If you don’t take good care of your teeth and gums during your orthodontic journey, there is a good chance you could suffer a poor oral health. So, to help you have a healthy smile when you have braces in Ventura, California, our orthodontist, Dr. Adam Lautt, has some tips for you.

First, care for your teeth and braces regularly. To do so, you need to brush after each meal and snack as well as right before you go to bed each night. You also need to rinse and floss daily. Finally, you need to visit your dentist for your routine checkups every six months. These tasks can help you remove the harmful bacteria from your teeth and appliance.

Second, have a tooth-friendly diet. To do so, you need to stay away from sugary, sticky, and acidic foods and drinks. You should also stick to consuming foods and drinks that have calcium and are healthy for your teeth and gums, like bananas, mangoes, cut-up carrots, cheese, dairy products, milk, and water.

Third, expose your teeth to fluoride. Fluoride can help you avoid enamel erosion and weak teeth. This is because the mineral seeps into your teeth and nourishes the enamel, giving it the ability to stay healthy and prevent dental issues.
