The Brushing Tips You Need to Properly Clean Your Smile When You Have Braces

Posted .

When you are aligning your smile with braces, it’s important to properly clean your teeth, gums, and appliance regularly. If you have an improper brushing routine, it won’t do much good. So, to help you have the best brushing routine possible, our orthodontist, Dr. Adam Lautt, is happy to give you the tips and information you need.

First, equally clean each tooth. Spend about 10 seconds scrubbing every tooth and make sure to use the same cleaning technique to clean the front, back, and chewing surfaces as well as around the brackets and under the wire.

Second, use a soft-bristled toothbrush as you clean. This type of brush might not seem very tough, but it is. It can properly clean your teeth and braces as well as clean and care for your oral tissues. You should also use fluoride toothpaste as you clean your smile. That way your teeth can be strengthened at the same time they’re being cleaned.

Third, gently brush the braces. Press the toothbrush against the appliance so the bristles spread around and under the brackets and wires. Brush in and around every piece of the braces.
